Understanding the technical indicators
When it comes to waterproof jackets, two key figures always stand out:
Schmerber (waterproofing)
This measures the fabric’s ability to resist rain.
10,000 Schmerber = heavy rain
20,000 Schmerber = prolonged downpour
30,000 Schmerber = storms and extreme conditions
MVTR (breathability)
This measures the fabric’s ability to let sweat escape. The higher the number, the drier you’ll stay inside.
10,000 MVTR = good breathability during moderate activity
20,000 MVTR = optimal breathability even during intense effort
In short: the higher the number, the better the protection (or breathability).
