Whether it be for learning, relaxation, reflection or even disconnection, reading books have so many benefits to offer which is why we have asked some of our athletes, what are their preferences when it comes to books. Here they share with you some of their favourite inspirational and thought provoking reads….
01. LE PETIT PRINCE by St. Exupéry
The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince) was first published in English in April 1943, then in French following the liberation of France. The story follows a young prince who visits various planets in space, including Earth, and addresses themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss. Despite its style as a children's book, The Little Prince makes observations about life and human nature.
'For me "le Petit Prince" is an invitation to dream and have tolerance. It helps me to take a step back and have a new point of view on different things ;-) I think this is a good book to read every time you feel alone and misunderstood'.
02. HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT by Matt Fitzgerald
Revisits some of the most extraordinary moments from the history of endurance sports to show how mental strength allows some athletes to perform at a level way beyond their physical limits, to will their body to do what was previously thought biologically impossible.
'It offers some new thinking into how the body and mind can overcome a series of obstacles in training and racing. He’s written a lot about running in the past and this included some of the more up-to-date thinking and research on performance - not just for running but any competitive sport'.
03. YOU ARE THE PLACEBO by Joe Dispenza
Is it possible to heal by thought alone—without drugs or surgery? The truth is that it happens more often than you might expect. In You Are the Placebo, Dr. Joe Dispenza shares numerous documented cases of those who reversed cancer, heart disease, depression, crippling arthritis, and even the tremors of Parkinson’s disease by believing in a placebo.
"You are the placebo is an amazing book about the power of the mind. It's backed up by science, Joe is a neuroscientist so it will also appeal to the scientific person as well as the more spiritual one. I recommend reading this book anytime doubt creeps into your mind or you just can't get over an injury or illness".
04. NORTH by Scoot and Jenny Jurek
Scott Jurek is one of the world's best known and most beloved ultrarunners. North is the story of the 2,189-mile journey that nearly shattered him. When he set out in the spring of 2015, Jurek anticipated punishing terrain, forbidding weather, and inevitable injuries. He would have to run nearly 50 miles a day, every day, for almost seven weeks to break the Appalachian Trail time record.
¨A great read that puts your own challenges into perspective and helps you go the extra mile when you need it most. I had many late nights reading this book...it is so hard to put down.¨
05. ENDURE by Alex Hutchinson
In Endure Alex Hutchinson, Ph.D., reveals why our individual limits may be determined as much by our head and heart, as by our muscles. How high or far or fast can humans go? And what about individual potential: what defines a person’s limits? From running a two-hour marathon to summiting Mount Everest, we’re fascinated by the extremes of human endurance, constantly testing both our physical and psychological limits.
¨It's all about how to suffer for longer. I feel that the problems we are all encountering during these tough moments in the World, is directly affecting our minds. So I really believe if you read this, it will be helpful to deal with these times a bit better.¨
