UTMB Race Recap 2023

Coming from behind, it looked like a repeat of his 2016 victory, veteran Ludovic Pommeret(FR) was forced to keep cool and calm and find his way back into the race after some problems early in the race. He did just that and had us on the edge of our seats as he was passing many of the top guys to run all the way into an incredible 5th place. With a time faster than his 2016 victory, he left us once more with goosebumps!

After his 10th place performance in his first UTMB® attempt in 2022, Doctor Thibaut Garrivier(FR) set his sights on something bigger and better than his previous attempt. While running his own race early on, he waited until Courmayeur to set fire on the leading men. A perfectly controlled effort, despite the effects of fatigue, his coolness paid off with an outstanding 6th place.

Then it was the most inspiring performance by Swissman Diego ‘Zpeedy’ Pazos, who despite finishing 23rd and with 8th and 10th place finishes in the past; admits that “this was the race he is most proud about” Coming from 85th position to crawling his way back in the 2nd half of the race.

“Stomach cramps, great difficulty breathing and the impossibility of running downhill marked my first 8 hours...a long, very long descent into hell. But suddenly I started to feel better and the good sensations returned. My UTMB started after 70km…From then I gave everything. I didn't think, I threw myself into it body and soul without a second thought...”

It was also a great result for the young Theo Le Boudec (FR) who in his first 100 mile race finished in 33rd position in just under 25hours.

Running conservatively, the Portuguese runner controlled his effort, slowly making his way through the field. Despite suffering cramps later in the race, he fought on to finish in 22nd position and take the victory in his category.

“I had a goal in mind for months, worked towards it, shaped my body and mind for it, made small sacrifices for it. The plan was to run as fast as possible and set a time of around 10:20/30hr. I ended up with 12 hours..yes I took a risk and failed. Not how I wanted it, but years ago I was doing 800m on the track, and now this... so I am still amazed by this change”
