Known as one of the monuments of Ultra Trail, The Diagonale des Fous and the Grand Raid de La Réunion departed for the 32nd edtiion, with undoubtabely the most competitive elite start list the race has seen.
Considered one of the most difficult ultra-trail competitions in the world, the ´Diag´ got underway on Thursday evening from Saint-Pierre in the islands South, crossing diagonally to finish in Saint Denis in the North. This year an additional 10km added to an already brutal race totalling 175km and 10,100mD+. The mythical race with breathtaking scenery, extreme temperatures and the most technical terrain seen in any ultra, the race took on the Piton de La Fournaise massif to the Plaine des Sables via the Réunion National Park…only accessible by foot.

Another Hardrock 100 podium finisher from this year and dreaming of following in the footsteps of his French teammate to have success on both races, Diego ´Zpeedy´ Pazos returned for his 4th race attempt at the Diag. In 2015 and 2017 he finished just off the podium for 4th, followed by 19th in 2019. Landing on the podium was his ultimate goal to end a perfect season.
After his emphatic victory to conclude an amazing year of racing in 2023 that included victory also at Hardrock 100, Aurélien Dunand-Pallaz headlined the long list of favorites to take to the start once again in this years edition. Despite withdrawing from UTMB Mont-Blanc, the Diagonale des Fous kept his 2024 dream alive and recovered to return for the 2nd big goal of the year.
Then there is the man who knows the island better than anyone, the home hero and the biggest sporting name to come out of Reunion Island. Lining up for his 3rd Diagonale after the misfortune that he encountered in the 2022 edition, we are proud of the obstacles David Hauss has overcome to find the motivation and desire to return to the start line of this very special race for him.
DIEGO 4th AT DIAGONALE DES FOUS
The mythical race on the Reunion Island returned for the 32nd edition with an impressive Elite Men start list...
It´s as tough as any ultra can be, with 175km and over 10,000mD+ of technical yet beautiful terrain. From the cold of the night to the extreme heat during the day, it´s the ultimate test of the toughest.
We were proud to see our 2023 Champion back on the start; Aurelien Dunand-Pallaz, joined by Diego ´Zpeedy´ Pazos for his 4th attempt. While it was David Hauss, the islands hero who made a special return to racing in his homeland.
From the start, the pace was high and our men settled into their own rhythm, each with a lot of experience on the race and knowing the day will be a long one.
Always maintaining top 10 and moving up to 5th place, our 2023 winner Aurel was clearly not having the same day as last year. He fought on, trying desperately to find his legs but eventually feeling deep fatigue and unable to move at the rhythm he is capable, decided to withdraw after 115km.
On the other hand, Zpeedy was having a great time. After 30km he sat in 19th place but kept pushing with a hope of reaching his best 4th place result of the Diagonale.
As night reached day, he slowly moved his way through the field and eventually after 140km of racing, he moved into 4th place. Eventually crossing the line after 26h33´42¨ he ends his 2024 season with another great result after his 2nd place at Hardrock 100.

After a break from racing, David Hauss´s return to his home race was more significant than ever. He knew despite everything, that he would find a way to make it to the finish. He battled all the elements but ensured he crossed the finish line in St Denis hand-in-hand with his family. We are proud of you David!!
