ANOTHER UTMB MONT-BLANC TO REMEMBER!!
The 2024 UTMB Mont-Blanc has once again filled us with pride and awe. This year's race was a true testament to the strength, resilience, and determination of our athletes. As we look back on the unforgettable moments and incredible achievements, we celebrate not only their results but the unwavering spirit that drives them to conquer the mountains year after year.
The final and most anticipated race of UTMB week gave us so many emotions to top off an incredible week of racing...
The UTMB 176.4km / 9915m D+ is the very essence of ultra racing. With its twists and turns, the queen race has surprised and confirmed talents.
In this 21st edition of the race, Ludovic Pommeret fresh off his Hardrock 100 victory and race record, celebrated 20years since his first UTMB race. Alongside him, Aurelien Dunand-Pallaz, Thibaut Garrivier, Helio Fumo and Sage Canaday completed our Compressport Team to start to the famous startline in Chamonix on Friday evening.
Working his way through the field after a tough start due to back tightness, it soon became apparent that the Ludo that we know best, was on his way back. He moved from top 40 all the way to top 15 as he entered Courmayeur after 80km of racing. We started to relive the emotions from his 2016 comeback and rode the beautiful wave with him all the way to his top 5 finish. At 49 years of age and backing up his 5th place performance from last year, we continue to be in awe of the Frenchman who has easily gained ́legendary ́ status!
Massive congratulations also to our Portuguese Helio Fumo, completing his first UTMB and 100 mile race. What a performance to be proud of. After 26h ́41 ̈50 ́ he entered the famous finish line in Chamonix.
Unfortunate end to the race for Aurelien, Thibaut and Sage who despite all efforts, were forced to withdraw from the race. They joined several of the favorites in this 2024 race, who were also unable to complete this very tough edition.
It was their first time at the start of the UTMB race and what a debut it was, running together for most of the race to finish amongst the top 10... With 57km and 3498mD+, the OCC commences in Orsieres, Switzerland, tackling the Swiss Valley before crossing the Franco-Swiss border by the emblematic Balme pass. By-passing the tough La Flegere on route to Chamonix, the 2024 edition was a tough one that saw a lot of movement in the top 20 positions in the 2nd half of the race, as the scorching sun took its toll.
Commencing conservatively in their very first time on the OCC course, Rosa (ESP) and Theres (SUI) knew the race was not going to be easy in the heat so they ran together smartly just inside the top 20. Each step of the way, they reeled in runners to find themselves closer to the top 10.
Smiling every step of the way, Rosa pushed hard on her way home to Chamonix to cross the line for 9th place. Just behind and despite suffering feet pain, Theres had an outstanding race to take 11th.
Congratulations ladies!! What a race against an extremely stacked field of elites.
ARIANE WILHEM
TDS - 2nd Woman
24:42:03
Kicking off the racing week, we were on the start-line in Courmayeur to support our Swiss runner, Ariane Wilhem who was set to take on her first UTMB race being the TDS. A tough yet beautiful 148km / 9556km D+ is said to be one of the most picturesque races of the week, linking the Aosta Valley in Italy to the Savoie in France. The technical and demanding route, was perfectly suited to Ariane who took victory earlier this year in the rugged terrain of Madeira at the MIUT 80km race.
A perfectly controlled race, she set off running inside the top 3, settling into her own rhythm and looking comfortable. Despite some stomach issues early on, she fought on and by the 91km mark in Beaufort, she had taken the lead.
As the race entered the night once more, she continued to fight and push with all she had left despite being overtaken by a fast charging eventual winner Marie Dohlin.
Running through Les Houches past the loud cheers of the whole Compressport crew gave her the final burst of energy to arrive to Chamonix. After 24h42 ́03 ̈ she reached Chamonix in 2nd place. What an amazing performance. We are so proud!
