Wearing Compression helps Finish the UTMB® – A scientifically-proven fact

Every year, during August`s last weekend, the best trail runners together with numerous amateurs around the world gather at Chamonix to take part in the Mont Blanc Ultra-Trail UTMB®.

You will be more than 2500 to be sharing the same dream: go round the Mont-Blanc in less than 2 days! Even though each of you have been training thoroughly for months, half of UTMB® participants will not reach the finish line (an average of 46 % exactly since the first race in 2004).

COMPRESSION TRAIL PRODUCTS HELP YOU TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE

Totally excessive and disproportioned, the mythic trail event (170km-track, more than 10 000m of positive altitude, crossings of more than 2500 m and occasional adverse weather conditions : night, wind, cold, rain, snow) requires, in addition to the best training, full personal autonomy and the mandatory apparel and equipment.

PROJECT WHITE FLOW ACONCAGUA

COMPRESSPORT athlete Fernanda Maciel gives back to local communities

Fernanda shows it is not always all about sport, but as well giving to local communities with different kind of projects under the name “White Flow”. She started in 2012 with White Flow Camino de Santiago. She ran the famous pilgrim track that crosses France and Spain by mountains, paths and villages. 860km in 10 days without support crew. Solidarity means a lot to Fernanda and she visited and raised funds for children suffering from Cancer.

 Fernanda Maciel Aconcagua

Solidarity all over the world

Stunned by the 2012 experience, Fernanda repeated it for White Flow Favela da Rocinha in Brazil running through the alleys, stairways and paths of this most dangerous favela in Brazil, but showing that thanks to the Peacemaker Policy Units program, inhabitants of the favelas can go out of poverty and danger thanks to social activities. Today are happening running and MTB events inside the Favela da Rocinha. In Nepal, Fernanda ran and won the Everest Trail Race, a COMPRESSPORT event, and worked with the Foundation Mountaineers for Himalayas aiming at building basic education projects in the area of Himalayas.

Fernanda Maciel Aconcagua

White Flow Aconcagua

Some of the most prestigious trail runners in the world were in the Aconcagua area at the end of 2014. While a new male record was being recorded, Fernanda Maciel was working at cleaning the Aconcagua National Park, educate people to recycling. But she as well visited and helped children without nutrition of Conin Foundation. Fernanda made her attempt of setting the female record running up to the top of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in America, culminating at 6.989m. The first part of the ascension went well, but around 6.000m of altitude she felt big pains in lungs and throat due to extreme conditions (-20°c, winds at 55kmh), and had to be evacuated by helicopter once at the base camp at 4.300m “I came already with a sore throat from the last expedition! High mountains are so exhausting! But yesterday was the day to try it, because we had the better weather until then! So it was and I gave it ALL!”

Fernanda Maciel will come back later in Aconcagua, and is now focusing on Ultra Trail events for 2015.

TOP 6 SPORTS WHERE COMPRESSION IN CUSTOM SPORTS APPAREL IS USEFUL

> You are reading : TOP 6 SPORTS WHERE COMPRESSION SLEEVES ARE WIDELY USED AND WHY <

1/ TRAIL RUNNING

The repetition of shocks in Trail Running causes a lot of stress for the muscles, joints and tendons and may impair the performance. Keeping your muscles compact and solid, the use of compression sleeves (for calves and thighs) absorbs these shocks (-33 % vibrations) leading to less muscle oscillations and therefore less traction on tendon and muscle itself. Consequently your performance will be enhanced and your recovery process improved.

Trail Running Compression Sleeves

 2/ TRIATHLON

In any triathlon, T1 is the stage between the swim and the cycling ones. During this stage, triathletes switch from their swim custom sports apparel into their cycling gear. Triathletes may think that wearing compression gear make them waste time (few seconds), but the benefits of compression are worth it. On the one hand, compression’s aerodynamic properties provide an economy of 5 watts in cycling, i.e. you are able to save 1 min 30 sec on triathlon Ironman. On the other hand, the reduction of shocks during the run will ensure less traction on tendon and muscle itself and will help you finish your challenge and improve your performance.

TRIATHLON Compression Sleeves

3/ CYCLING

Many pro tour cyclists like Alberto Contador, Peter Sagan or Thibaut Pinot use COMPRESSPORT compression sleeves to recover between stages during competitions as Le Tour de France. The Full Socks are mainly used during the travels to ensure a feeling of light legs before the race. The Full Leg appears to be the ultimate recovery weapon to recover after the race. It’ll prevent inflammations and also limit the delayed muscle onset soreness (DOMS) in cycling.

Cycling

4/ SWIMMING

One-day long competitions include multiple efforts – series and finals – often repeated in a short period of time (few hours). Swimming is largely concerned. You accumulate metabolic toxins (lactic acid) and your energy reserves decrease, causing the fatigue to appear earlier for subsequent performances. Improving the venous return, the compression triggers a series of actions: muscle blood flow and oxygenation (necessary to restore the energy reserves) are improved (+15%) and the metabolic waste removal is accelerated (-13 % of lactate). In summary, custom sports apparel that uses compression will help your body stay strong: pain will be reduced and subsequent performance will be improved.

Swimming Compression Sleeves

5/ RACKET SPORTS AND TRACK AND FIELD

Pressing on your skin and muscle, the compression activates some cutaneous and muscular receptors. The message goes up to your brain and you are able to feel better proprioceptive feedback, to feel better you body in the space. Consequently, your balance is improved which will help you for sprinting, jumping and changing directions as often requested in racket sports or track and field.

Track Compression Sleeves

6/ TEAM SPORTS SUCH AS RUGBY, HANDBALL, SOCCER AND VOLLEY

Proprioceptive feedback is also interesting for team sports that require sprint, jump and changes of direction. Moreover this kind of efforts induces many shocks and causes a lot of stress for the muscles, joints and tendons. In the worst case, these shocks can promote the emergence of tendonitis, shin splints or other injuries… Absorbing the vibrations the compression guarantees less muscle oscillations and therefore less traction on tendon and muscle itself. A study conducted on 1200 sportsmen shows a reduction of this kind of injuries by 29 %!

DEEPLY GREEN AND EXTREMELY MAD …

so went the Ultra Trail World Tour Series Final during this third weekend of October! Overall, Compressport® and its range of compression clothing take partner athlete Gediminas Grinius to the top of the podium while Pau Capell grasps the bronze step. In the women`s league, Fernanda Maciel earns a honourable 11th place after a breakthrough year on the trail tracks.

Trail, Compression Clothing and Nature… an unbeatable trio

Compressport® and partner athletes abandoned the traditional trail tracks and city life and went Nature!  It began in Portugal and ended in the Indian Ocean. In complete immersion in the mountains, surrounded by the seas, with the horizon as ultimate limit and geared with the best compression outfits, our athletes proved once again that when there is a will there is… a trail way!

Many Go Green during the Eco-Trail Madeira…

Professionals and amateurs reached the beautiful island of Madeira, in their compression socks to run 4, races with 4 different ascents, the toughest being the 8km race at 5400 of ascent. And even if adverse weather conditions decided to

380x253rock the boat, our Julien Chorier and Casey Morgan finished 1st and 2nd respectively. Our two champions could not have dreamt better finish to their respective season.

Special mention: David Bormann and Sylvain Laurmanaged the 40km-race to the finishing line at the most honourable 9th and 12th positions respectively.

… Others Go Mad on the Diagonale des Fous

To complete the Ultra-Trail World Tour series, our professional trail runners headed south to cross Reunion Island from south to north for a madding trail race. The maddest of them all, French François d’Haene did it in less than 24 hours while our Maxime Cazajous narrowly missed the podium after more than 25 hours of running.

A great year of trail running comes to an end…  looking forward to a tremendous 2017 with Compressport®.

MARATHON DES SABLES 2017 – BEND IT LIKE FERNANDA MACIEL

She made it to the third place during the 2016 edition of the Saharan Marathon des Sables and she need no further motivation to roll in for the 2017 and she did well! Fernanda MACIEL loves outdoor sports and her relationship with nature of all kinds is of an exploratory kind.

The Marathon des Sables known to be the toughest foot race on Earth would deter the reckless of runners. Fernanda MACIEL is of another sort. Her major focus as trail runner this year was to make the best out of the Marathon des Sables.

Fernanda-Maciel-824x400Let only the first stage where she forced herself to the 4th place, during the next four stages Fernanda battled fiercely to stay close to the podium. 2nd on the second stage, she stabilised her ranking at the 3rd place on the subsequent days. After such fantastic runs throughout the week Marathon, Fernanda MACIEL was proclaimed 3rd overall best performance of the event in the women`s league.

Spanish Laia DIEZ finished her first ever Marathon des Sables at a wonderful 8th place.

The pair BON MARDION/GACHET is relentless!

They made it clear on the Dynastar X3 Courchevel, which attracted more than 500 participants on Easter Sunday for a unique mountain triathlon.

Starting at 830 meters the exclusive Dynastar triathlon combines a 13.9km of bike run, 6,3km of Trail running and 4,8km Ski Mountaineering. Original and extraordinary, it is meant for only the experienced ones. Our fantastic William Bon Mardion not only made it to the finish line in pole position but also broke the race record. Xavier GACHET was not far behind, grasping a well-deserved 2nd place less than 3 minutes behind William.

Philippe GILBERT – All Good Things Come In 4 in Compression Clothing!

Philippe-Gilbert-824x400He did it in 2010 (6:22:54), he did it again in 2011 (6:30:44), he came back in 2014 to win the race (6:25:57) and during Easter Sunday 2017 he reinvented the saying that “things always seem to go in more than threes!” at 6:31:44. The race breakthrough occurred around less than 29 Km before the finish line. That`s how Philippe Gilbert of Quick-Step Floors attacked and made himself unattainable till the finish line, leaving the others to pick up the pieces.

WEAR COMPRESSION… FINISH YOUR UTMB® RACE!

UTMB® is a mythical race and those who take the challenge every year since 2004 are unanimous to admit that it’s a unique experience at the heart of the Mont Blanc massif. An adventure that requires stamina and passion to be able to cross the mental and physical limits and reach the finish line. The statistics to date show that 54% of the UTMB® participants end their race. To participate in the best conditions, honour this mythical race (170 km, 10500 m d+ and d- to accomplish in less than 46 h 30 minutes) and be on the safe side, trail runners have to prepare themselves rigorously.

Many studies have already put light on the fact that compression-embedded garment helps in improving aerodynamics. At Compressport® we believe that compression clothing, designed specifically for trail runners, meet their expectations : shock absorption, limited risks of injury, lesser muscular damage, etc. We have put the theory to the test.

To Be or Not To Be a UTMB® Finisher, that`s the question!

A study has been carried on the last four UTMB® editions with three main objectives:

==> To Confirm who finished their race and who did not

==> To Determine if the finishers wore compressive gear

==> To Establish if the non-finishers wore compressive gear or not.

Ludovic-Pommeret-(Finish-line)-4eme-image-824x400

The various rankings established on the UTMB® during the past four years, helped determine who finished and who did not finish their race. Then, confronted with photo-gallery of the participants  on the start line, we were able to confirm who wore compressive socks and sleeves and who did not. Thanks to their respective rank numbers we could identify the photos of each participant. Of the 10 008 participants taking part in the last four UTMB® editions, only    9 828 were subjects of the study, the other 180 having not been photographed.

And the answer definitely lies in Compression…

Ludovic-Pommeret-(Finish-line)-14eme-image-824x400

The ultimate goal of the study was to confirm the assumption that those who favoured compressive clothing such as compressive socks and sleeves finished their UTMB® race much easily than those who did not. The results seem to be confirming the said assumption. 52,9% of the 6354 identified finishers wore elastic compressive gear.

46,2% of UTMB® trail runners dropped out before the finish line. Almost half of them had their compressive gear on.

Capture d’e?cran 2017-05-17 a? 02.02.22

Ludovic-Pommeret-(Finish-line)-1e?re-image-824x400

After each UTMB® event, a linear relationship was established between the use of compressive clothing and the number of participants who made it to the finish line (p < 0,05).

The more compression was worn, the more those who finished their runs.

Capture d’e?cran 2017-05-17 a? 02.00.02

Compression Clothing impacts on Performance

Ludovic-Pommeret-824x400

This study puts light on the fact that elastic compression (full socks, sleeves) was more used by UTMB® finishers (52,9%) than by those who gave up prematurely (46,2%). Moreover, the linear relationship between the use of elastic compression and the number of participants finishing the race confirms even further this assumption. To conclude, it turns out that compression can help trail runners complete such long-distance contest as the UTMB®.
